Retirees and those who will soon join those ranks learned or reviewed the ins and outs of Social Security and what they can do to assure peace and harmony in their families after their demise at the first annual Re-fire hosted by Home State Bank Sept. 8 in the conference rooms at Wild Rose Casino.

The event was planned for the bank’s older customers and drew 224 of them for educational sessions, dinner and entertainment by the Dueling Pianos.

Speakers included local attorneys Rita Pederson, John Gerken and David Hoyt who talked about wills, trusts, and powers of attorney; financial advisor Tim Heisterkamp, who talked about Social Security and options for claiming benefits; and Josh Kruse, who gave tips on what can be done on smartphone, including banking, and cyber security on cellular devices.

Bonnie Steinfadt and Leora Davis agreed that it was information they wish they’d had when they were a bit younger. “I wish I had known all this when I was 60,” Davis said.

Shirley Franey concurred, and added “I’d recommend this to anyone, particularly to someone who hasn’t filed yet for Social Security.”

Home State Bank plans to hold Re-fire every year on the day after Labor Day.
